Dr Alasdair Watson

Dr Watson obtained his medical degree from the University of Newcastle in 2003. After completing internship and residency at St Vincent’s Hospital he undertook full-term laboratory research at the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute, studying preservation of donor hearts for transplantation. He was awarded his PhD for this work by the University of New South Wales. He subsequently trained in cardiothoracic surgery in Sydney and Brisbane and was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2015. He completed subspecialty training in TAVI, laser lead extraction and transplantation at St Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver, Canada, where he was subsequently appointed consultant cardiac surgeon. He returned to St Vincent’s Hospital in 2018 and practises full-time on the St Vincent’s campus. His practice covers the full scope of adult cardiac surgery, with particular interests in:

  • aortic surgery
  • minimally-invasive valve surgery
  • transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI)
  • pacemaker implantation and extraction
  • heart transplantation and mechanical circulatory support

He consults at Mid North Coast Cardiac Services and operates at St Vincent’s Hospital and St Vincent’s Private Hospital.
